Le Marche is the "region of a hundred theatres" on account of having the greatest number of historical theatres in Italy with respect to its population. This is a cultural heritage spread throughout almost every town, going back to the 17th century and 18th centuries. Important finds testify to the presence of amphitheatres already present in Roman times in 35 municipalities. Many of these were subsequently destroyed, but the few which have survived are still used today as atmospheric backdrops for the presentation of modern and classical works of theathre. Any visit to Le Marche should feature a tour devoted to these historical theatres, hopefully including a memorable performance chosen from the rich programme of events presented there.
