Calligraphy is the art of writing in a regular, elegant and ornate hand. In antiquity, it often developed in a religious setting, elevating the pleasure of writing into an art form, giving to the creation of a document or a letter a sense of pleasure in its presentation. Between the lines in a letter, we catch a glimpse of the writer's soul, we make contact with a deeper essence, bringing the writer before us, as if she or he were actually there. Writing awakens an emotion, solisifies a memory, transfers a certain scent onto the page. We tremble as we wait to receive a reply, our hands brushing against the same paper which was in the hands of the writer, and the strokes of the pen assist us in our interpretation as we try to close the distance between us by reading and re-reading.
