The term cabreo originates from Spanish notarial language used to define boundaries and jurisdictions over territories. In Italy, cabrei became popular in the 16th century thanks to the transcriptions of surveyors, trabuccanti, geometers, and measurers. Properties were depicted with refined pictorial elements representing elevations of buildings, churches, castles, mills, farms, houses, cultivated land, orchards, and wooded areas. Ancient cabrei and maps are preserved in numerous historic buildings, collections and museums, bearing witness to the changes in crops, land and farmhouses that have shaped the landscape, history and rural life of the Marche region over time.
