The Marche region is known as the ‘region of a hundred theatres’ because it has the highest number of historic theatres in Italy in relation to its population. This cultural heritage is widespread in almost all the villages, with theatres dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Important discoveries testify to the presence of amphitheatres in the thirty-five municipalities that existed in Roman times. Many of these have been destroyed over time, but the few survivors are still used today as evocative settings for the performance of modern and classical plays. A visit to the Marche region cannot fail to include an itinerary linked to historic theatres, taking advantage of the rich programmes to attend some truly evocative performances.
